What Is FL-41? Rose-Tinted Glasses for Light Sensitivity and Migraine, Explained
What FL-41 glasses are, what the research actually shows for migraine and light sensitivity, how they differ from blue light glasses and sunglasses, and when to see a doctor.
First, what is photophobia?
Photophobia means light causes discomfort — not a fear of light, despite the name. In Urdu it is often described simply as روشنی سے حساسیت, sensitivity to light. Bright sun, office tube lights, LED screens and flickering light can all feel harsh. It is very common during migraine, and it also comes with dry eye, concussion and some other eye and brain conditions.
Because it has many causes, new or worsening light sensitivity is worth a check-up with a doctor or eye specialist before you treat it with any lens.
What is FL-41?
FL-41 is a rose-coloured lens tint. It filters part of the blue-green band of visible light while letting enough light through to wear indoors. It was studied for people whose eyes are sensitive to light, which is why FL-41 lenses are often called migraine glasses.
What the research shows — and what it doesn't
The evidence is small but encouraging. In a 1991 study of 20 children with migraine, those wearing rose FL-41 lenses for four months reported fewer headaches, while children given a blue tint did not keep any improvement (Good et al., Headache, 1991).
In a 2009 randomized crossover study of people with benign essential blepharospasm — a condition with strong light sensitivity — FL-41 lenses did better than grey lenses for light sensitivity, fluorescent-light sensitivity and reading (Blackburn et al., Ophthalmology, 2009). Laboratory work also suggests people with migraine respond differently to different colours of light (Noseda et al., Brain, 2016).
What the research does not show: that FL-41 cures or prevents migraine, or that it works for everyone. The studies are small. The fair summary is that a rose tint may reduce light-triggered discomfort for some people, as part of wider care.
FL-41 vs blue light glasses
Blue light glasses filter a narrow band of short-wavelength light and are sold for screen comfort. A 2023 Cochrane review of 17 trials found they may make little or no difference to eye strain in the short term. FL-41 filters a wider blue-green band and was studied for light sensitivity rather than screen strain. If bright light itself bothers you, the rose tint is the one designed for that.
FL-41 vs sunglasses
Sunglasses cut all light heavily. Outdoors that is exactly right. Indoors, specialists generally advise against dark lenses, because the eyes can adapt to the dimmer light and bright rooms can then feel even harsher when the glasses come off. A lighter rose tint is the indoor alternative.
One more rule: no tinted lens — rose, yellow or dark — is a good idea for driving at night, when your eyes need every bit of light.
Everyday ways to cut harsh light
Lower screen brightness and use dark mode in dim rooms. Take short screen breaks — every 20 minutes, look about 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Where you can, swap flickering tube lights for warm, steady lighting, and sit near natural light rather than under a bare fitting.
Getting FL-41-style lenses in Pakistan
Our Migraine Relief Pink lens is an FL-41-style rose tint, cut to your prescription in any of our eyeglasses frames.
